About Dr. Ryan

General background

Dr. Ryan's career in the healing arts began with work in San Francisco as a massage therapist and hospice volunteer. His work with massage therapy and his personal philosophy made osteopathic medicine a good fit, and he graduated from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994. He completed residency training in Family Medicine in 1997 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. After residency he served the National Health Service Corps on Cleveland's near west side.

Ryan Family Medicine

Jeff moved to Albany in summer 2000 and began practicing with Community Care Physicians in Clifton Park, New York. In August of 2008, Dr. Ryan left CCP and ventured into solo practice in Albany, New York. His practice is open to both existing and new patients and accepts Medicare and most major commercial insurances. Patients without insurance are also welcomed.

Primary Care for children, adults and elders

Jeff participates with most area insurances and is a primary care provider. He has been board certified in Family Medicine since 1997 and his practice is currently limited to outpatient medicine. Should you require hospitalization, Dr. Ryan will work with the hospitalist responsible for your care.

Alternative and Complementary Medicine

While the bulk of his work is conventional family medicine, Jeff is quite interested in alternative and complementary medicine. He was trained in acupuncture at UCLA and began the practice of acupuncture in 2001. Jeff makes use of osteopathic manipulation, including osteopathy in the cranial field. He is conversant in the use of western botanical, or herbal, medicines and is certified in primary care homeopathy. Jeff has studied spiritual psychology at the Concord Institute with Dr. Tom Yeomans, and has had considerable personal experience in meditative practice. He served as co-medical director for Community Hospice's palliative care program. From 2006 to 2008 Jeff was a fellow in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. This cutting edge fellowship, established by Dr. Andrew Weil, established even further Jeff's integrative perspective born of a great variety of personal experience.

Medical Acupuncture and Osteopathy

For several years, Dr. Ryan has offered medical acupuncture and osteopathy services at his New Karner Road offices. Acupuncture involves the placement of sterile, disposable needles in strategic points along the body's energy channels (meridians) and in other areas where one is experiencing pain or imbalance. Osteopathic manipulative medicine ("OMM") arises from the same tradition as chiropractic,. Although "adjustments" can be done, techniques are generally gentler and slower, yet just as potent. Dr. Ryan blends these and other approaches from massage and energy-work traditions in a unique way. Treatments last from 30 minutes to one hour, and are intended to be both deeply therapeutic and relaxing. For more information, click on the "Acupuncture" tab.

Loyola Recovery Foundation

In May of 2011, Dr. Ryan took on the role of medical director for the Loyola Recovery Foundation. This program was developed to provide detoxification services to Veterans as well as civilians in the community. Loyola Recovery Foundation is a unique partnership with the Veterans Administration.
